I am constantly changing my wallpapers and home screen layouts across my fleet of devices. If you know me well, you know that I am never satisfied with one particular configuration. The other day I was trying to find a great wallpaper that matched well with the orange casing of my iPhone 17 Pro Max. The first image that popped into my head was the original Palm Prē wallpaper. It’s not hard to find these old wallpapers on the web, but unfortunately they tend to be incredibly low resolution. So I had an idea, could I upscale some of the best default wallpapers ever and make them actually usable? The answer turned out to be a resounding yes and it was shockingly easy.

Fortunately, my favorite wallpapers from webOS were immortalized on the TechCredo blog back in the day. I downloaded them, uploaded them to ChatGPT, and gave it very careful instructions to recreate them as high resolution iPhone wallpapers. Not only did it do an excellent job of recreating the images that were available, it was able to strip some from photos of actual devices where I could not find the wallpaper file itself.
